Area Description

Experience the Bergisches Land!

Remscheid is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is the third largest district in Bergisches Land. It is located on the northern edge of the region, on south side of the Ruhr area.

The ‘Bergisches Land’ is a beautiful hilly region and its landscape is characterised by woods, fields, rivers and streams and numerous reservoirs. Large parts of the area are declared nature reserves.

If you enjoy hiking, then you will feel at home hiking through the lovely countryside and taking in the stunning views found in this area. Take a walk around one of the reservoirs set in a nature reserve or through the woods and across the fields. Autumn is one of the most beautiful times of year to experience the’ Bergisches Land’.

The river Wupper attracts walkers, but also avid canoeists. The Bevertalsperre (a manmade lake) is popular with those who enjoy saiilng and windsurfing, and in the summer months you can also swim in the lake or sunbathe on the beach.

Local leisure centres attract lots of young people in the area. The H2O in Remscheid is a water park for everyone. You can relax in the sauna or have fun on the slides and enjoy the outdoor heated pool.

For those who are interested in the history of the area can visit one of our various museums – for example, the Röntgen Museum (Röntigen discovered ‘X-ray’), the open air museum in Lindlar or Schloss Burg in Solingen – just to name a few.

Wuppertal is close by and boasts a ‘Schwebebahn’ - Wuppertal Floating Tram. It opened in 1901 and is still in use today as normal means of local public transport. It follows the river Wupper through the Wupper valley.

Not very far away from Wuppertal is the Müngsten Bridge park. The Müngsten Bridge is the highest steel railroad bridge in Germany and crosses the valley of the river Wupper and connects the cities of Solingen and Remscheid. You can take a walk through the park, admire the bridge and maybe have a picnic on the bank of the river.

If you’d like to experience a German metropolis whilst here in Germany, then Cologne and Düsseldorf are only an hour’s ride away. You can visit the imposing Cologne Cathedral or do a little window shopping on the famous ‘Königsallee’ in Düsseldorf. Each of these cities, of course, offers Art galleries, museums, theatres and concert halls.

As you can see, Remscheid and the area around the city, has a lot to offer you while you visit our school.
